(WashingtonDC.CityRegions.Com, May 29, 2015 ) South Riding, VA -- With the summer season coming up many people will be firing up their BBQ grills and doing plenty of outdoor cooking. With this in mind, Kiserena would like to remind everyone to follow some food safety tips to help keep family and friends safe from foodborne disease.
Storing Always store raw meats in a cooler or refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. If using a cooler, pack it with ice, keep it out of direct sunlight and do not open it every now and then. Seal meat packages thoroughly and place them at the bottom of a refrigerator or cooler so that juices do not come across other food products.
Cleaning To avoid cross contaminating food, wash hands, cutting boards, and utensils thoroughly with soap and warm water before and after they have been in contact with raw meat.
Grilling Color alone does not reliably indicate that meat is safe to eat. Use an instant read digital food thermometer to measure safe internal temperature ensuring food has been cooked adequately to destroy bacteria. To check the temperature, insert the food thermometer through the thickest portion of the meat. All raw pork, beef, and lamb should be cooked to a minimum temperature of 145ºF. Poultry should be cooked to 165 ºF. Cook raw ground beef and any meat sausages or patties to 155 ºF. Never partially grill poultry or meat and finish cooking later.
When cooking beef hamburgers, take patties off the grill and insert the food thermometer through the side, all the way into the middle. When cooking numerous pieces of meat, check the internal temperature of each piece. Use clean plates and utensils when taking cooked meat off the grill. The food thermometer should be washed in hot, soapy water between every reading of food temperature, including every piece of meat. Food should be kept hot until it is ready to serve.
With these simple guidelines, grilling or cooking food in safety is possible with no worries. "The most vital thing is to enjoy your summer BBQ experience. It is an experience you and your family or friends will definitely remember and treasure," relates Kiserena.
