(WashingtonDC.CityRegions.Com, December 22, 2014 ) South Riding, VA -- The holiday thrill is upon everyone. Shopping, decorating, and cooking preparations are already being planned in most family. Women are always looking forward to the additional time they spend in the kitchen as they create foods to share with their loved ones. Kiserena shares tips to refresh everyone's mind on food handling practices, and to avoid foodborne illness and ensure a happy holiday.
Armed with helpful information, consumers can enjoy holiday meals without worrying about getting sick due to harmful bacteria. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 48 million Americans get sick from food borne illness each year, mostly due to consuming undercooked or raw foods.
To help those who want to have safe but delicious meals this Christmas season, Kiserena shares some tips to keep foods healthy and prevent harmful bacteria from contaminating the food and potentially making the consumers sick.
• Refrigerate or freeze foods that must be chilled immediately. • Cook all potentially hazardous foods, such as meat, fish, poultry, shellfish, milk and eggs, to a safe internal temperature. • Cook poultry, dressing and stuffing at 165 degree Fahrenheit for no less than 15 seconds. • Cook ground pork and beef products to 155 degree Fahrenheit for no less than 15 seconds. • Use a meat thermometer to check the food temperature and ensure food doneness. • Wash the hands using soap and warm water before and after handling raw meats, vegetables and fruits. • Wash utensils well and make surfaces germ-free before and after usage. • Reheat leftover refrigerated foods immediately to 165 degree Fahrenheit before hot holding or serving. If it's liquid, bring it to boil. • Defrost food with the refrigerator, microwave oven, or cold running water, and not over the kitchen counter. • Do not let foods marinate at room temperature. • Keep marinating foods refrigerated. • Do not over load the refrigerator.
"We at Kiserena believe that whether it's a holiday or a regular day – food must be cooked the healthy way. Equipped with helpful tips and kitchen tools, cooking holiday meals is easy and enjoyable," says the Kiserena spokesperson.
