(WashingtonDC.CityRegions.Com, October 05, 2015 ) Springfield, Virginia (VA) -- The Strong's National Toy Hall of Fame acknowledges games and toys that maintain their popularity over many decades. The hall of fame inducts a very small number of toys each year. Selection criteria includes recognition, respect, longevity, whether or not it encourages learning and discovery, and how innovative it is. To date, only 56 toys have been inducted. The 2015 finalists include many iconic toys, including one that is known for fostering pretend play and thematic storytelling by means of topic or subject based pieces such as figurines, vehicles, and buildings.
In past years, several toys and objects that fall within the pretend play category have been inducted. For example, in 2005 the cardboard box was inducted; according to The Strong, "over the years, children sensed the possibilities inherent in cardboard boxes, recycling them into innumerable playthings." As another example, the dollhouse was inducted in 2011; according to The Strong, "Dollhouse play encourages kids to make up their own stories about families and activities as they move tiny figures from room to room and prepare the rooms for meals, clean-up, parties, bedtime, and other familiar routines."
"We are glad to see that the genre of our initial toy is once again receiving the recognition and praise that it deserves," said the CEO of Play Basics. The CEO predicts that this type of toy will be one of the inductees that will be announced at The Strong's 2015 induction ceremony on Thursday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. Although the pretend play toy that is a finalist this year is of a particular brand, The Strong makes it clear that kids use its "figures and sets to populate the stories they create in their make-believe play"; this qualification applies to many toys, especially Play Basics' flagship product currently available on Amazon.com.
