(WashingtonDC.CityRegions.Com, September 10, 2015 ) Baltimore, MD -- Drug courts are becoming more popular around the nation to treat nonviolent drug offenders, as opposed to incarceration, which is more costly, and ultimately stagnates addiction rates. Baltimore's drug courts are now implementing mandatory naloxone training and certification for those inducted into drug courts for non-violent offences, according to Biz Journal. The aim of the training is to mobilize communities to respond to opiate overdoses in Baltimore to reduce overdose related deaths. Current and recovering drug addicts are among the first choices for training, as they are most prone to witnessing overdoses, or experiencing them firsthand.
Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen is quoted by Biz Journal, "Every time we do a training, we know that person now has the potential to save someone else's life - multiple people's lives - and potentially have their own lives saved."
Drug Rehab Baltimore is a rehabilitation facility on a mission to help those with untreated substance use disorders get the full spectrum of treatment necessary to overcome addiction from the source. The treatment center asserts the implementation of new drug court training for naloxone is imperative to saving hundreds of lives. An associate from the facility comments,
"We have Naloxone, but it's not being as effective as it can be, because the people who most desperately need the medication either don't have ready access to the opiate reversal medication, or simply don't know it exists, or is available. In fact, much of the public are unaware of our critical need for opiate reversal medications, or training in how to use them. Drug courts are beginning to turn the tides of naloxone in Baltimore by requiring training for it, but we need more community outreach programs to educate the public and train as many as we can. We truly are in a war with drugs- but the means of battle have drastically shifted. Similarly to neighborhood watch groups, perhaps the implementation of overdose watch groups should be in order."
